It is a nice wooden frame with an aluminum plate and a sheet of clear plastic to allow you to put in a map and use grease pencil to your hearts content. This one has a leather loop for a writing implement and 2 eyelets for a leather carrying strap. These are interesting. I have found one or two that I know were Wehrmacht used, I have also found similar ones that were
